This produces the hallmark of a Japanese blade – the hamon, a wavy, visible temper line formed where the cutting edge is harder than the blade's spine. The hamon isn't merely aesthetic; it reveals the smith's artistry and control over the process, as well as acting as a shock absorber along the blade.

Finally, the blade undergoes meticulous polishing, a step that may take weeks. Polishing enhances both form and function, bringing out the steel's layered texture and making it far more resistant to corrosion. The careful revelation of the hamon is considered a high point of a polisher's skill.
